三学
The "three studies" or vehicles of learning-- discipline, meditation, wisdom: (a) 戒学 learning by the commandments, or prohibitions, so as to guard against the evil consequences of error by mouth, body, or mind, i.e. word, deed, or thought; (b) 定学 learning by dhyna, or quietist meditation; (c) 慧学 learning by philosophy, i.e. study of principles and solving of doubts. Also the Tripiaka; the 戒 being referred to the 律 vinaya, the 定 to the 经 stras, and the to the 论 stras.
