path = File.join(config.assets_dir, source)

It's nil because config = {}。我相信它是空的，因为在 actionpack-3.0.7/action_view/base.rb controller 的第 220 行中，它是 nil：

config = controller && controller.respond_to?(:config) ? controller.config : {}
