It doesn't say anything about it being free, though, only open source. I suspect you still have to buy the product, but are then given the source and are licensed to modify it etc.
Engineering giant Lockheed Martin has used Microsoft's SharePoint 3.0 with Active Directory 2003, along with a Google search appliance, to build a home grown alternative to Facebook, but the technology is easier implement than the policies surrounding social networking. (That's old...)
