Linux内核告别2.6进入3.0新时代 [转]

在Linus Torvalds发布第一版Linux内核将近20年，历经39个2.6内核主版本之后，Linux之父刚刚通过了Linux 3.0的发布。Linux内核3.0目前已经在RC1阶段。
Torvalds在当地时间下午6点左右将93MB的Linux内核3.0 RC1下载包发布到了kernel.org的邮件列表上。

　　虽然版本号的大改变看起来非常令人振奋，不过在Git上签出代码的批注上，Linus 表示，3.0 版本只是数字上的改变而已。随后的官方声明上Torvalds则表示，除了例常的六成驱动更新和一些补丁修复之外，3.0版本没啥特别的，不会改变 ABI，不会改变 API ，也不会添加任何另人激动及兴奋的新功能。

　　3.0中可能的一些改进包括添加 EXT4 和 Btrfs 文件系统的 Cleancache 支持，添加 Microsoft Kinect Linux 驱动支持，以及各种开源图形驱动的改善。

呵呵。前天看过。
曾经有人提议将2.6内核发展到2.6.40后在升级到3.0，但是linus并没有采纳。

11. there was a plan to take it up this year too. But let's face it -

13. color without holding a referendum on it? So I'm just going all

16. Now, my alpha-maleness sadly does not actually extend to all the
17. scripts and Makefile rules, so the kernel is fighting back, and is
18. calling itself 3.0.0-rc1. We'll have the usual 6-7 weeks to wrestle it
19. into submission, and get scripts etc cleaned up, and the final release
20. should be just "3.0". The -stable team can use the third number for
21. their versioning.
23. So what are the big changes?
25. NOTHING. Absolutely nothing. Sure, we have the usual two thirds driver
26. changes, and a lot of random fixes, but the point is that 3.0 is
27. *just* about renumbering, we are very much *not* doing a KDE-4 or a
28. Gnome-3 here. No breakage, no special scary new features, nothing at
29. all like that. We've been doing time-based releases for many years
30. now, this is in no way about features. If you want an excuse for the
31. renumbering, you really should look at the time-based one ("20 years")
32. instead.
34. So no ABI changes, no API changes, no magical new features - just
35. steady plodding progress. In addition to the driver changes (and the
36. bulk really is driver updates), we've had some nice VFS cleanups,
37. various VM fixes, some nice initial ARM consolidation (yay!) and in
38. general this is supposed to be a fairly normal release cycle. The
39. merge window was a few days shorter than usual, but if that ends up
40. meaning a smaller release and a nice stable 3.0 release, that is all
41. good. There's absolutely no reason to aim for the traditional ".0"
42. problems that so many projects have.
44. In fact, I think that in addition to the shorter merge window, I'm
45. also considering make this one of my "Linus is being a difficult
46. ^&^hole" releases, where I really want to be pretty strict about what
47. I pull during the stabilization window. Part of that is that I'm going
48. to be traveling next week with a slow atom laptop, so you had better
49. convince me I *really* want to pull from you, because that thing
50. really is not the most impressive piece of hardware ever built. It
51. does the "git" workflow quite well, but let's just say that compiling
52. the kernel is not quite the user experience I've gotten used to.
54. So be nice to me, and send me only really important fixes. And let's
55. make sure we really make the next release not just an all new shiny
56. number, but a good kernel too.
