you don't understand what watchsat said?Your OS can't understand that the vm guest OS has deleted it's files from filesystem.
The vmdk you assigned to your guest OS is more like a "physical disk" to your guest OS. Can you strink your physical disk's size in real world? (even you delete some files from it)
I have never seen that the size of ".vmdk" file have been reduced,
after shutdown and power off vmware .

Restart the VMware demon.
The disk space still locked out by the VMware demon, OS couldn't see those space, even deleted those files/directories already.
