Table widget
In this part of the Java SWT tutorial, we present the Table
widget. Table
is a two-dimensional grid of cells. It is possible to write data into each of these cells. The widget was introduced by spreadsheet applications.
Table
can display column headers, and when there are a lot of cells, Table
can show scrollbars.
Empty table
The first example creates a simple, empty table.

The code example creates a table widget with three columns and fifteen rows. The table cells are empty.
Table table = new Table(shell, SWT.BORDER);
An instance of a Table
widget is created.
table.setHeaderVisible(true);
The setHeaderVisible()
makes the table header visible. The header consists of table column names.
table.setLinesVisible(true);
The setLinesVisible()
displays the borders of the table cells. By default, the cells are not visible.
String[] titles = { "A", "B", "C" };
These are the column titles.

In this for loop, we create the table columns. Instances of TableColumn
represent a column in a table widget. The setWidth()
sets the width of the column, and the setText()
method sets the column name.

TableItem
represents a row in the table. This code creates fifteen empty cells.

Filling cells with data
In the second example, the table cells show some data.

The example shows a table widget with three columns and three rows. The cells are filled with data.

The setText()
method fills all three cells of a row with data.

In the example, the data from the selected row is displayed in the statusbar.
table.addListener(SWT.Selection, event -> onTableItemSelected(table));
A selection listener is added to the table. The onTableItemSelected()
is called whenever a table item is selected.

The getSelection()
method returns an array of selected table items. (Since we work with the default selection mode, which is the single selection mode, only one table item is returned.) We use the getText()
method to retrieve the data from the cells of the row. We build the message and display it in the label with its setText()
method.

Adding new table items
In the following example, new table items are dynamically added to the table.

At the bottom, there are two text widgets and a button. The data inserted into the text widgets is inserted into the cells of a new table item.

In the onInsertButtonSelected()
method we get the inserted text from the text widgets.

We ensure that the text widgets are not empty.

New table items are constructed, taking the inserted data.
